Database administration is a physical data management function that requires intimate knowledge of the DBMS, the platform it operates upon, and the performance and technical usage requirements of the applications that that are dependent on the database.

Properly applying database analysis and design techniques prevents the creation of poor performing and high maintenance databases, and, worse, the creation of unsharable data. Through the Epiphany project management practice, The SCI Way stipulates the method for undertaking projects.

EMPOWER, the production operation practice, defines the target environment. It provides a model for managing the operational environment, including quality assurance and metrics management. At the beginning of the engagement, the account team, augmented with SCi senior management and staff, work with the customer to customize the EMPOWER practice and tailor it to the customers specific circumstances. The Epiphany practice provides the planning templates and the configuration management practices for implementing EMPOWER, as well as implementation systems solutions.

[Empower]

Once in production, by applying the EMPOWER production operation practice, SCi tailors an operational model suited to the specific needs of the customer, emcompassing such issues as proper access to the database, appropriate configuration parameters, and executing regular and robust operational routines (business continuity, capacity planning, performance management, etc…).

The result of the implementation phase is the Production Operations guide. This document is expression of the EMPOWER practice, as applied to the customer’s specific circumstance. It also contains the service level agreement that defines the service points and their expected performance metrics.
